I totally disagree with the statement which says that grades encourage students to learn. When we talk about methods to learn, grades isn't the important one. We should look for other worries like student's capacity and daily use of what it studied, because the grades consists only to measure the knowledge of the person in that hour, that moment.
The biggest disadvantage of grade systems is that it can be corrupted. The student, when doing a test, can cheat the answers with his colleagues, be holding some cheating notes or using the technology to find answers to the tasks in the web porting electronic stuffs, like cell phones. Beyond that, in a case of an exam which has multiple choices the student sometimes mark the correct answer without know what he/she is doing, an act that raises the grade he/she will take. I have a friend, for example, that everyone in the university likes him. He always receive "help" in the exams, my colleagues gives him the answers in papers. He also have a good cell phone that has access in the internet and book readers, where he can always find solutions to the problems that exists to evaluate him. In spite of these he always are taking good grades and going ahead in the university.
One other reason for this is that the grade only evaluate the student's knowledge at that present moment. This means that a person can prepare himself/herself only to the day of the test and when the days pass he doesn't know more what he/she had studied one day before the exam. Therefore, the student could also only study to the model the test is, looking for maximize his/her grade. For example, there a lot of friends of mine that only study one day before the test ad they also get old exams papers to see how the test it will looks like. This way they always be prepared for that day and for that test, they get great grades, but the knowledge is more less, they memorize more than learn as well as get good grades.
Pursuant to these reasons I believe that grades are not the better way to encourage students learn. They doesn't need collect a number in an test, what they really need is to be able to use what they see in the class and say they are capable to use in the real life, trying to use what they study in their routine. Maybe the system which gives grades should be changed to a system that asks a student if they can proceed in the subject he/she is studying.
